Toyo versus BFG MT tyres 255/85RT16

We’ve done an extensive 4×4 Overland experiment where we have taken two brands of the same size tyres and driven them extensively from London the UK to South Africa.
The Toyo was fitted to a long wheel base Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and the BFG fitted to a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado short wheel base.

The terrain so far has consisted of snow, rain, mud, desert sand, rocks and corrugations which has been very hard on the tyres, cars and drivers.

The first comparison would occur with the first puncture which occurred in Nanyuki, Kenya. The Toyo had the fist puncture which was a small nail which slipped between the MT treads.

We’ve taken pictures of the tread and measured them. Both tyres have done around 13000 kms now. The Toyo tyre has been plugged and the spare is on and we’ll take another look in South Africa in about 7000-10000 kms from today.

You’ll also notice that the BFG maintained it’s tread blocks better than the Toyo and looks better at this stage. The road noise on the Toyo are surprisingly low and it’s cost is around 10-20% lower than the BFG’s.

  1. I would love to hear the outcome of your tire test after the entire 20K trip has been completed.. If possible by any means, kindly send your final comments about the quality and end results of the Toyo’s v.s. BFG to me at louisb@bantamtrailers.co.za. I will appreciate your comments a lot. Thank you and have a safe and enjoyable trip .

Why do you think the tread on the toyo looks so greasy? I want to get the toyos but this looks weird to me. The bfg looks normal and brand new.

    • Hi Robert
Thanks for your reply. I had been rolling the tyre around a garage floor, so that could account for the greasy colour you mention. But after inspecting the treads, I cannot remember about particularly concerned about that aspect you mention, the tyres continue to perform well. My final descriptions did reflect the blocks integrity with BFG>TOYO. Toyo was surely superior according to purchase price, BFG may just get ahead at the line, but is expensive! Hope this helps you! thanks Nic Andela

Thanks thats great. It seems in the US the bfg km2 is becoming hard to find or being discontinued. I have heard complaints.

  3. No problem, we treated those Toyo’s badly in the sense of driving through mud, on tar, desert sand, up high degree incline and decline rock routes and they where great and remain in good order. For the price they spot on, so go for it! thanks Nic A
