There’s no Bilharzia and great beach swimming in the lovely lake Malawi.
The local’s also keep their distance and will not cross the resort boundary.
The resort can be described as rustic, basic, peaceful and tranquil with stunning views of the crystal clear water of Lake Malawi. You could start writing a book here while overlooking the most beautiful sandy beach with gentle waves of the lake crashing at your feet.
At night you can see the fishing boats using light to lure fish into the nets. This is truly relaxing location.
It’s safe and the staff is extremely friendly and welcoming. What a great spot!
He has also instituted some great Social Responsibility:
Mdokera is currently involved with a fishnet program where they pays local fisherman to use the new Chikwiti fishing nets that catch specific fish and exchanges them for the old nets which catch ALL fish species which they used for mosquito nets.
We discovered the local kids use around 100 wrapped condoms that they get from Hospitals and from some scrupulous adults as chore payments to make footballs because local balls are unreliable, expensive and burst because of local conditions. These second-grade balls originate from countries like China, India and Pakistan. Good manufacturers producing first-rate footballs like Taiwan and the UK are no longer available to these people in Malawi.
Condoms are being used as currency; some scrupulous adults exchange firewood collection, building products transport e.g. bricks and other unethical chores for condoms they have received through the medical system, so their primary healthcare function to prevent sexual diseases and prevent pregnancy is compromised.
The condoms are wrapped over pieces of blanket and cloth in order to achieve a football; obviously the number of condoms that are used determines the size of the ball. The final stage is strings of cotton that are wrapped around to preserve the final balls integrity!
Mdokera used to buy new first-rate footballs, but are no longer available and from far away. Good footballs are only available at more than 15 000KW per ball and more than 200kms away after preordering, making it difficult to solve the condom misuse.
Mdokera’s place is found between Florence and Young’s Bay, Lake Malawi.
Approx. 121 kms south of the Tanzania-Malawi border town Songwe and is found 4 kms north of Chitimba town, just off the M1 road where the road is very close to the lake. It is well signed posted “Mdokera Beach Lodge” with a small drive in between two white macorro canoe boats. Also look for the ‘fresh bread’ served signpost.
GPS Way points:
S 08 48 020
E 034 18 251
Camping as around 1000 MK, while the huts start from 2500 MK upwards depending on how many beds you have put in your beach hut. The food is good and they make fresh baked bread in the mornings.
The showers are clean and are suspended canoe showers from local trees while the toilets are basic clean long drops, but worth looking past this for the beauty you receive from the whole resort.
It’s simply beautiful.
